Sugar, sugar….aw honey, honey…

Hey everybody! Hope your week is going well so far, mine has been a little crazy, but the biggest plus side is not having to do homework all day long like the last two years.

I have been watching the Bachelor this season and it is hard to put into words my thoughts on it. Wait, who am I kidding, no it’s not!! My three favorites so far are Kaitlyn, Britt, and Whitney. However, some of the other women just amaze me with how they are acting…they are so desperate! I find it sad that they feel they can find true love through a reality tv show. Come on guys out there, these beautiful women are looking for love, give them a chance!! Needless to say I am hooked and the drama of this season is insane, cannot wait to see what happens sense.

I started working on my secret project and to say the least it is off to a fantastic start!! I have not been this excited about something of this caliber in a long time (probably for 8 years when I first realized that I wanted to be a personal trainer). It will be a while until I am ready to share with you all, but my goal is to make a statement in society, a good statement. So keep your eyes and ears open throughout this year, I am hoping within the next 6-8 months to be able to open up and share with the world my plans and ideas. **squee** 

At my new job we are starting a Whole 30 Nutrition Challenge and I am doing it (even though I already eat Paleo, which is the general idea of the Whole 30), but what will be difficult for me is not even having my one cheat meal a week (which my husband and I have been doing for the last 2.5 years) and not even having Paleo sweets and treats. I may have mentioned a few times that sugar is my ultimate weakness. Ultimate does not even cover how much I love sugar, but doing this challenge should help me cut back on my cravings for sugar.

Sugar is such a wonderful tasting “food”, however, sugar is similar to drugs in the effect they have on your body. Here are a few images that explain how sugar wreaks havoc on our bodies:

As you can see from this image that sugar takes us on a “roller coaster” ride, both physically and emotionally. In points 1 and 4 it mentions we crave sugar more after eating, this is similar to how we crave medications or in worse cases how people crave taking more illegal substances…we cannot get enough sugar once we stop eating it. We want more.

Insulin is a hormone that is produced in our pancreas that helps regulate the metabolism of carbs and fats by absorbing glucose from our bloodstream and taking it to our muscles and and fat tissue to be used as a form of energy. When we become insulin resistant the body is unable to process insulin properly and the pancreas continues to produce insulin even though the cells in the body are unable to transport it properly as they are not able to pick up the insulin. The image above shows how an increase in insulin can negatively impact our bodies. As you can see increased insulin leads to increased blood pressure, increased cholesterol, decreased liver detoxification pathways, and increased inflammation. Long story short these are also all symptoms of obesity.

This last image I threw in as well because soda is still one of the most widely consumed beverages around the world. BUT, people just are not understanding that even though those little bubbles that tickle your nose when you take that first sip of Coke are not as good for us as we think they are! I mean  just look at what the picture says…phosphoric acid is in your soda and it has the ability to rot your teeth. Ew. Soda also contains high fructose corn syrup which can lead us to gain weight and decrease brain function! Again, ew! So think twice about your choice of beverage when you go out to eat or go to the movies.

If you have more questions or concerns about your nutritional intake it would be highly recommended to contact a dietitian in your area as that is what they do for a living! I just inform!
